Dog dies after being placed in overhead compartment during United flight

A 10-month-old puppy died while stored in an overhead bin on a United flight from Houston to New York

At the end of the flight, they learned the animal had died. United said the dog should have never been in there.

"She sat in the airplane aisle on the floor crying, and all of [the] surrounding passengers were utterly stunned", Ms Gremminger said. Online posts from witnesses said the passenger explained there was a dog in the bag, but the flight attendant insisted it go in the overhead. 'I held her baby as the mother attempted to resuscitate their 10 month old puppy. They assured the safety of the family's pet so wearily, the mother agreed'. But a small dog in a carrier that fits under the seat is typically allowed.

When the woman was forced to place the dog in the overhead bin, Gremminger exchanged glances with the man next to her.

The owner had boarded United Flight 1284, from Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport to NY, on Monday, with her puppy in its carrier. "I heard the dog barking a little and we didn't realise it was barking a cry for help".

United Airlines confirmed to ABC News on Tuesday that a dog died on board a flight from Houston to NY on Monday after flight attendants requested that the passengers keep the dog in the overheard storage compartment.

However, Spirit Airlines denied any agent would suggest killing an animal as an option: "After researching this incident, we can say confidently that at no point did any of our agents suggest this Guest (or any other for that matter) should flush or otherwise injure an animal".

The ten-month-old puppy boarded the plane in a standard pet carrier and was placed under the seat in front of its family, in a fashion most flights with animals request.

Last August, Lulu, a King Charles spaniel, died in the cargo hold of a United Airlines jet.

"We assume full responsibility for this tragedy and express our deepest condolences to the family and are committed to supporting them", the airline said in a statement to NBC 5.

They confirmed the puppy, which can cost upwards of $1,000, should never have been placed in the overhead bins.

A spokesperson for United said the airline will investigate the dog's death "to prevent this from ever happening again".

Eighteen died on board, compared to just two on Delta and American Airlines flights.
