Fertility Clinic aware many about their damaged egg & embryos

Second US fertility clinic experiences freezer malfunction resulting in damage to eggs, embryos

San Francisco-based Pacific Fertility Center informed roughly 500 fertility patients that a storage tank malfunction March 4 may have left their eggs and embryos unviable, according to The Washington Post.

That embryologist, Herbert said, "immediately rectified" the problem by refilling the tank. The Ashes said they stored two embryos at a University Hospitals fertility clinic in suburban Cleveland after Elliott's cancer diagnosis in 2003. He said that the clinic's staff thawed a few eggs and found that they remain viable, though they do not know how many are still usable.

The lawsuits are a result of the potential loss of more than 2,000 eggs and embryos at UH's Fertility Center two weekends ago.

A fertility expert says that the almost simultaneous storage failures at two fertility clinics across the country from each other are "beyond stunning" but that it appears to be just a coincidence.

"Keep in mind that these families have entrusted their most valuable property in the entire world - their frozen embryos - to these facilities and clinics", Peiffer Rosca Wolf attorney Adam Wolf said in a news release issued Monday. "We are committed to getting answers and working with patients individually to address their concerns", the University Hospitals statement said.

The University Hospital Fertility Center in Cleveland has a long-term storage tank containing liquid nitrogen that suffered equipment failure.

The clinic declined to specify the number of eggs and embryos affected but said that "several thousand" were in the waist-high tank.

The lab director transferred the eggs and embryos to a spare storage tank filled with nitrogen. The increased temperature risks damage to the eggs and embryos. Before undergoing treatment, he froze his sperm and the couple stored their embryos at UHFC, DiCello said. The clinic also has brought in a multidiscplinary team to investigate the tank itself and "every aspect that involves cryopreservation", he said. The hospital notified patients Tuesday.

According to the Pacific Fertility website, egg-freezing costs $8,345 for the first round and $6,995 for each subsequent round.

"We just want to hold UH accountable, that they should make this right", said UH patient Kate Plants.

Herbert who is a physician and researcher in assisted reproductive technology talks about the same.

The clinic is uncertain how numerous eggs and embryos are damaged, he said, and can't be used for in-vitro fertilization. He moved to San Francisco in 1990 and, with colleagues, purchased Pacific Fertility Center nine years later. UH officials say the lawsuit will not affect an ongoing independent review into the malfunction.
