Fla. gov. signs gun restrictions into law after school attack

Andrew Gillum talks about NRA lawsuit on MSNBC's

Almost a month after 17 people were killed in a horrific Florida school shooting, the state's governor, Rick Scott, signed a gun safety bill Friday that raised the minimum age to buy a gun but also allows some teachers to be armed.

The National Rifle Association (NRA) has filled a lawsuit in an attempt to block new legislation that will place stricter controls on the sale of guns in Florida.

"I think when you start getting into some of the blanket restrictions on people's Second Amendment rights, I think that that is constitutionally vulnerable".

Previously, Floridians had to be 21 to buy a handgun, but they could purchase a semiautomatic rifle at 18: That inconsistency made no sense, and it allowed Nikolas Cruz at 19 to legally buy the weapon that he allegedly used to commit mass murder.

The governor, who is expected to seek a U.S. Senate seat later this year, has called for raising the minimum age to purchase any type of gun, but he does not support arming teachers.

Governor Rick Scott, a Republican and staunch ally of the gun lobby, enacted the bill.

Speaking after the lawsuit was filed, John Tupps, the Communications Director for Scott said: 'We will review the lawsuit'.

The bill also creates a so-called "guardian" program enabling teachers to train to carry handguns on campus.

Wild day of trades has Browns fans losing their heads — Twitter reaction
ESPN's Adam Schefter further reported neither of the draft picks being traded by the Browns are in the first or second round. With the loss of cornerback Joe Haden prior to the 2017 season, Cleveland had a gaping hole at one of their corner spots.

A statement issued earlier by the NRA had derided the higher minimum age and new waiting period for rifle sales as a prescription that "punishes law-abiding gun owners for the criminal acts of a deranged individual".

The bill has been an important political consideration for Scott, who is facing term limits as governor and is widely expected to challenge Florida's Democratic US senator, Bill Nelson, in November's midterm election.

Florida's Broward County school district is believed to be the first to stop accepting NRA money after the shooting there last month.

New gun laws, he said, are not the answer. Bill NelsonClarence (Bill) William NelsonGingrich says arming teachers only long-term solution to school shootings Florida students turn to activism in wake of shooting CNN invites Trump to town hall with parents, students of Florida high school MORE (Fla.) this year.

Chris Grady, a senior at Stoneman Douglas, called the signing of the legislation a "baby step".

Florida's embrace of gun restrictions came as Congress remains mired in partisan divisions on the issue and as other states, from IL to Vermont, consider whether they ought to tighten the rules on gun ownership in the wake of the Parkland attack. Florida hasn't passed any legislation like this in God knows how long.

Seventeen people were killed on February 14 when a 19-year-old former student stormed into a school building spraying fire from an AR-15 assault rifle. Prosecutors have not announced a decision. He said it was time for a change.
