GM tipped to launch peer-to-peer auto rental service

General Motors Planning Airbnb-like Program

Through its Maven carsharing unit, General Motors is reportedly set to pilot a program allowing GM owners to rent out their vehicles when they aren't in use, sources close to the matter told Bloomberg.

This summer Maven will start testing a new peer-to-peer car-sharing option that will allow users to add cars to Maven's platform for other drivers to rent.

According to the story, GM vehicle owners can put their cars on Maven's platform and then will share the revenue from the renal with GM.

With the new form of Maven it is unclear whether only GM vehicles will be eligible or if it will be open to all vehicles and manufacturers like Turo and Getaround. Rather than using its own fleet of cars, Maven would bring in current auto owners, GM would have access to many more vehicles without having to own and maintain them.

A spokesman for Detroit, Michigan-based GM declined to comment. Maven Gig also lends cars to drivers working for companies including Uber, Lyft and food-delivery businesses. Turo and Getaround are two bigger names in the space, though GM dwarfs both upstarts with its market value of $53 billion. In the last two years, Turo has seen its user base grow to almost 5 million and listed cars triple to about 200,000 units.

"Carmakers are preparing for disruption, so they are experimenting with different models", Marian said by phone.

Tesla Inc has hinted at a peer-to-peer sharing network, although the vision CEO Elon Musk laid out in July 2016 alludes to a service using fully self-driving cars. Cities like San Francisco are also pursuing legal action to regulate such companies.

Because of the success of Maven, it makes sense that GM is looking to expand the program.
