Intel reportedly eyeing Broadcom to thwart Qualcomm buyout

Broadcom has promised not to sell critical national security assets to foreign buyers if its deal to buy chipmaker Qualcomm is approved, another effort by the Singapore-based firm to appease United States security concerns.

The company argued that its move to redomicile to the US has been "a matter of public record since last November" and follows CEO Hock Tan's visit with President Donald Trump Nov. 2.

The federal government is involved in the transaction because Qualcomm does sensitive work for the US, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The chip maker's move to redomicile in the USA would essentially remove CIFUS' jurisdiction over its hostile bid because it would no longer be a foreign firm trying to acquire a US company.

There is also the prospect of a clash between Intel and a combined Qualcomm and Broadcom in the automotive sector. Most Qualcomm board members and employees regarded the acquisition as a fait accompli in view of Broadcom's strong will and the business integration trend in the industry.

Well, here's a new wrinkle in Broadcom's quest to buy rival chipmaker Qualcomm: Intel might actually try to buy Broadcom.

CFIUS reportedly is concerned about Broadcom's ties to Chinese firms, including Huawei.

CFIUS' involvement was also used as rationale by Qualcomm to delay a vote on its board of directors from Tuesday, 6 March, by a month.

Broadcom, a maker of chips for everything from cable modems to set-top boxes to digital video recorders, announced an unsolicited bid of $130 billion for Qualcomm in November.

Broadcom's Qualcomm acquisition is far from guaranteed, however, with significant roadblocks in the way of the hostile takeover.

While it did not identify those entities, the letter repeatedly described Qualcomm as the leading company in so-called 5G technology development and standard setting.

Acquisitions like these often reviewed by the respective United States regulatory authorities and if it has been witnessed that the deal could somehow compromise the best interests of the country, it is immediately turned down.

Politicians are anxious by the thought of a Asia-based company seizing control of Qualcomm, a company that is emerging as a leader in next-generation 5G chips. It continued its campaign to assure their reliability with another infographic Monday, noting that a majority of the board members are USA citizens, as are all of the top 20 shareholders.

Its offer for Qualcomm has been met with resistance, not only from Qualcomm executives, but also from the USA government, which has initiated a review on national security concerns.
