Kerala teacher's sexist remarks trigger 'watermelon' protest, women post nude photos

Kerala Women Launch Bare Chest Campaign On Facebook To Protest Professor’s ‘Melon’ Remark On Female Breast

A professor in Kerala has stirred a controversy with his statement that girl students of his college do not cover their chests with hijab but display them like the slice of water melon.

A clip of his speech has gone viral. Her husband Vishnu also supported her and posted her picture. Her friend Diya Sana posted pictures of Rahna posing nude and covering her face and breasts with watermelon.

While enraged students took to the streets to march in protest against the assistant professor who teaches Social Studies Education in Farook Training College, many took to the Internet.

According to reports, one of the women who shared her picture said to the media: "I am upset with hypersexualisation of breasts by people".

"I am a teacher of a college where 80 per cent of the students are girls and of that, the majority are Muslims".

The inspiration for the "watermelon protest" was drawn from the "Pink Chaddi" campaign to respond the attack on women in a pub in Mangaluru in 2009 by the activists of rightwing fringe group Sri Ram Sene.

"Just because people may find my breasts attractive, doesn't mean they are entitled to violate me or my body", Arathy added. He also said that they deliberately expose their chests. Earlier this month, the photo of a breastfeeding model on the cover of a magazine sparked a major debate in Kerala as social media users argued over its propriety. He termed such dressing as "Un-Islamic". They tie it in such a way that their chest is not covered. He said this in a comment made a few weeks ago during a counselling session outside the college. A woman's bosom is one of the body parts that attracts a man. "We have nothing to do with it and no student has filed a complaint in this regard", he defended the teacher, saying only a portion of his speech was circulated. "But showing part of it is like a slice of red watermelon being displayed", an Assistant Professor at Farook College, Kozhikode, said.
