MacBook Air May Potentially Release This Summer

Apple new entry-level MacBook to reach 4 million in unit shipments in 2018, says Digitimes Research

The latest comes from DigiTimes, which today reported that Apple will launch a new 13.3-inch "entry-level" MacBook late in Q2 this year.

Hsiao pointed out that Apple originally looked to reduce cost by seeking panel supply for the new MacBook from a China-based maker, but the US-based vendor has made a decision to source the panels from Korea-based LG Display due to issues at the China supplier.

Market analysts are predicting Apple's forthcoming "affordable" Macbook will ship 4 million units in 2018 - notably less than the Californian giant's aim of 6 million.

The new MacBook will reportedly enter mass production at the end of May or the beginning of June for a June launch, at which time it will face fierce competition from the likes of the Dell XPS 13 ($999) and HP Envy 13t ($899). The company is planning to revive the MacBook Air by releasing a cheaper new model during the second quarter of 2018, he says. The MacBook Air has been around since 2008 and received its last refresh in June 2017. This new screen will, therefore, qualify as a Retina display and if this device is branded as an "Air" it will be the first of its kind to have a Retina display.

This sounds similar to KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo's report that Apple has an update for the aging MacBook Air in the works. Quanta Computer's set to assemble 70% of orders and Foxconn the remaining 30%.

Meanwhile, the upstream supply chain has recently begun shipping components for iPad Pro upgrades and a new cheap 9.7-inch iPad - a refreshed version of its 2017 counterpart. Digitimes said that it will go on sale in the second quarter of 2018.
