McLaren Hyper-GT quicker than F1

The initial public showing of the "Hyper-GT" is planned "before the end of 2018" after a private preview for the 106 McLaren customers who have already placed deposits on the auto.

McLaren chief executive Mike Flewitt announced at the Geneva Motor Show that a public reveal of the still-unnamed vehicle can be expected this year.

It's already been decided that just 106 examples will be made, each one trimmed and finished to its owners taste by the McLaren Special Operations bespoke division at Woking - and yes, all 106 are already sold, at a cool £1.6 million (R26.25 million) each, before taxes.

The BP23 will hit the highest top speed of any McLaren yet. Featuring a three-seat cockpit design with a central driving position, the McLaren BP23 follows the same layout as the F1, and comes with a petrol-electric hybrid powertrain. The auto is the latest in McLaren's Ultimate Series of cars and will be built to excel on the track, though it will likely also be road legal. With the VW Group-owned Ehra-Lessien out of the question - the venue where Andy Wallace achieved 391km/h, or 243mph in the F1 - the company is searching for other possible locations, from test tracks to stretches of closed road. With well over a quarter-century of technological improvements, any top-speed run will likely be less fraught than Wallace's run in 1998 - something he described later as giving him "seriously sweaty palms".

A new McLaren Ultimate Series vehicle will arrive later in 2018 - codenamed McLaren BP23 - and it will, in many ways, be the spiritual successor to the legendary McLaren F1. McLaren Tasman, anyone? The guessing begins here.
