MN Anti-War Committee opposes confirmation of Pompeo and Haspel

Why Gina Haspel Is a Dangerous Pick to Lead the CIA

When Haspel was first appointed deputy director - a position that does not require Senate confirmation - in early 2017, it was widely reported that she supervised a Central Intelligence Agency "black site" in Thailand beginning in 2002 where two highly controversial interrogations took place, the most notorious being that of Abu Zubaydah.

Paul opposes the nomination of Gina Haspel, the current deputy director of the CIA and Mr. Trump's choice to head the agency, over concerns about her involvement in the CIA's interrogation program in the early 2000s.

The European Centre for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR) in June 2017 requested that the German public prosecutor issue an arrest warrant for Haspel for her role in the torture at the black site in Thailand.

ProPublica noted that her advocacy for shredding 92 incriminating videotapes, as well as the waterboarding of al-Nashiri, are "likely to be the focus of questions at her confirmation hearings".

Court filings, declassified documents and books written by those involved in the CIA's now-defunct interrogation program suggest Haspel didn't arrive at the secret prison in Thailand until after one detainee, Abu Zubaydah, was waterboarded 83 times in August 2002. Under the direction of Haspel, the prison fostered "waterboards" and "brutal interrogation techniques".

"Gina Haspel has spent her career defending the American people and homeland". Republicans only have a 51-49 majority in the Senate, and, already, both Sen. Senator Rand Paul, who repeatedly cited the false claims on a media tour highlighting his opposition to her nomination, brushed aside the erroneous information at the center of his attacks and reiterated his opposition. John McCain, R-Ariz., have voiced strong reservations. After consulting with the Justice Department, baseofficials eliminated "mock burial" as a torture technique and adopted all of the others, including the insects.

Paul also spoke out against Haspel in an article published by Politico Sunday. On Wednesday, Paul condemned the pick.

"Torture is always and everywhere wrong", Msgr. "And a question that every reporter should ask Democrats what made them change their minds". Besides waterboarding, other techniques included "wallings", or slamming subjects against a wall, slaps, sleep deprivation and nudity, according to the Washington Post.

However, "If he were to say no, it might be enough" to kill the nomination. "You're not respecting the intrinsic dignity of the person". His racist beliefs on Muslims uniquely disqualify him as top diplomat for the U.S. "I believe in journalistic practice, this a 'never event.' This should never happen".

"In the aftermath of the September 11th attacks, our government squandered precious moral authority in a futile effort to produce intelligence by means of torture". Only after the Bush administration tried to argue that waterboarding was "enhanced interrogation", and not torture banned by USA and worldwide law, did a domestic debate arise. Very clearly no. But Gina and people like Gina did it, I think, because they enjoyed doing it. "Appointing people in high positions who are, to say the least, controversial - not only in terms of their views but in terms of their adherence to fundamental ethics and law in the United States and global law against torture", he said.

"There are some people who would make a distinction", he said.

"America continues to suffer the consequences of those twin acts, the torture and the cover-up", she added. In fact, we need the exact opposite.

"Whether intelligence from torture is reliable or unreliable, or whether it is done to protect the country or save lives, is beyond the point".
