More Charges Pending In Utah School Bomb Scare

Matt Slocum The Associated Press

Following the discovery of the device at the Pine Valley High School in the city of St George, the school was evacuated for two hours while bomb squad officers swooped in to disarm it.

A teenager has been charged with bringing a homemade bomb into a Utah high school.

Law enforcement officials are on the scene at the school.

The bomb was discovered by a Pine View student Monday afternoon, who immediately alerted a teacher that smoke was coming out of a suspicious backpack.

The homemade explosive device was taken to Pine View High School on Monday, 5.

The backpack was left in the cafeteria of the high school during lunch where some students noticed it smoking. "After examining the device, bomb squad members indicated that if it had detonated, the device had the potential to cause significant injury or death", the police said in a statement.

'Based on our investigation we can confirm this was a failed attempt to detonate a homemade explosive at the school.

Police also said more charges are pending as a suspect in raising an ISIS flag on a pole at another school last month.

According to police, the teen had been researching ISIS and showing interest in promoting the organization.

"Initially they evacuated that area, but as soon as they realized they were dealing with a larger issue, and more potential for injury or damage, the decision was made to contact the principal of the school, and the SRO conducted an evacuation of the school with the principal", Giles said. More charges may come later, including charges from a February 15 criminal mischief incident at Hurricane High School.

Another local media source states that the suspect admitted to replacing the flag and painting the graffiti at Hurricane High.

When the ISIS flag was raised at the neighboring high school, someone also spray-painted "ISIS is comi [ng]" on the outside of the building.

Contemporaneous police statements based upon consultation with the Federal Bureau of Investigation indicated the perpetrator of the vandalism was not believed to be associated with ISIS and was not a threat to the safety of other students, an assertion that now appears to be at least half wrong; all that remains is to determine whether the would-be bomber was contacted by Islamic State agents after expressing interest in their propaganda.

'I think it is a shock to all of us that something like this has happened in one of our schools, ' he said.

A teenager who tried to detonate an explosive device at a Utah High School this week researched the terrorist group ISIS, police said.

Hurricane Police Officer Ken Thompson told The Associated Press on Tuesday charges are pending related to that incident.
