Pellegrino sacked: Southampton target Marco Silva as next manager

Nathan Redmond of Southampton looks dejected after the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Southampton at St. James Park

Saints are now one place and one point above the relegation zone and realistically need three more wins (they only managed five in 30 games this season under Pellegrino) to stay out of the bottom three.

The Saints have just sacked their previous boss Mauricio Pellegrini after a poor run of form, leaving the club right in a relegation scrap.

During his 30-match tenure as Southampton manager, Pellegrino accumulated an overall record of 5 wins, 13 draws, and 12 losses; a record a bit weaker than his predecessor, Claude Puel (12 wins, 10 draws, and 16 losses). Hovering just one spot above the relegation zone Southampton are in danger of losing the top-flight status they acquired six seasons ago.

Southampton will play its next premier league game against Swansea City.

In a statement released yesterday the club said that assistant manager Carlos Compagnucci and assistant first-team coach Xavier Tamarit had also parted company with the club.

With the dust having settled following the Saints' embarrassment at the hands of Newcastle on Saturday, the club's supporters though that if Pellegrino was to be sacked, they club would've already done so.

So they hired Pellegrino, and nine months on they must be regretting their decision.

Pellegrino admitted the players looked like they had given up and the club have now decided new management is needed to inject some fight back into a side that finished eighth in the top flight last season.

Former team-mate and arguably the club's greatest ever player Matt Le Tissier believes Hughes has what it takes to save Southampton from dropping into the Championship.

Next up for the Saints position?

Sinisa Mihajlovic has reportedly been contacted for the Southampton job, but Mark Hughes remains the favourite after Mauricio Pellegrino's dismissal.
