Prime Minister makes a congratulatory telephone call to President Xi Jinping

The Chinese people are united in their belief that "every inch of our great motherland absolutely can not and absolutely will not be separated from China", Xi declared in his speech before the almost 3,000 members of the National People's Congress.

Pointing at China's global ambitions, Mr Xi said his country would be strong but not aggressive and would not develop itself at the expense of the rest of the world.

In his speech, Xi said the leadership of the CPC is the defining feature of socialism with Chinese characteristics.

Speaking at the end of China's annual session of parliament, Xi's said that Taiwan would face the "punishment of history" for any attempt at official separation.

Earlier, China's National People's Congress also ratified a proposal to remove the two-term limit for president Xi, essentially paving the way for him to become leader for life.

"The endeavour of the Chinese people has led to a tremendous transformation of the Chinese nation: it has stood up, grown rich, and is becoming strong!"

The term limits were instituted in 1982 by former leader Deng Xiaoping, who wanted to prevent a return to the 10-year chaos of the Cultural Revolution, initiated in 1966 by Mao Zedong, who remained in power until his death in 1976.

China had the will, confidence and ability to defeat any separatist activity, Xi said.

In his speech after Xi's, Li Zhanshu said it has been the collective will of almost 3,000 NPC deputies and common wish of all Chinese people to unanimously elect Xi president of China and chairman of the Central Military Commission of the PRC.

When asked about Mr Xi's speech, Taiwanese foreign ministry spokesman said he hoped "countries of similar ideology", such as the US, Japan and the European Union, would support Taiwan's role in maintaining regional peace.

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang who addressed his customary annual press conference also spoke about China's determination not to cede territory.

He stressed the absolute leadership of the ruling Communist Party - of which he is head - in all aspects of Chinese life, including over the 2 million-member armed forces. At the same time he worked to calm fears of an increasingly assertive foreign policy, saying: "China's development will not pose a threat to any other country".

"Only those who are accustomed to threatening others will see everyone as a threat", he said.

There have also been vocal calls for greater autonomy or even independence for Hong Kong in recent years - and China says it is fighting an Islamist separatist insurgency in Xinjiang province.

He said that the country was prepared to fight against enemies if the need so arises.

Chief among Xi's priorities is controlling financial risk without derailing the economy.

He sought to appease global concerns about China's swelling debt, saying that the country is able to forestall financial risks, having collected higher-than-expected fiscal revenues previous year and holding enough bank provisions.
