Prosecutors to seek death penalty in Florida school shooting case

Nikolas Cruz Prosecutors Seeking Death Penalty

The state of Florida will seek the death penalty against Nikolas Cruz, who allegedly killed 17 people in the Parkland High School shooting.

In the documents, prosecutors call the mass shooting to which Cruz confessed "especially heinous, atrocious or cruel", as well as "cold, calculated and premeditated".

In a statement last month, though, he said the attack at Stoneman Douglas High "certainly is the type of case the death penalty was designed for".

The state attorney in Broward County, Florida filed a formal notice on Tuesday. Finkelstein said Tuesday that the prosecutor's announcement was not unexpected, but again repeated that his team was ready to have Cruz plead guilty on all counts in exchange for 34 consecutive life sentences without parole. The announcement doesn't negate the ability for a plea deal to be reached.

Court records show that Cruz withdrew his not guilty plea on Thursday.

The shooting has sparked a fierce national debate over gun rights, with numerous student survivors vowing to push for gun control regulations so that the shooting they lived through might be the last. Anthony Borges, 15, was shot five times. The commission has the power to ask voters to approve changes to the state's constitution. After surgeries, his condition was upgraded to fair.

The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School student is credited with saving the lives of 20 students by attempting to close and lock a classroom door during the February 14 attack where 17 people were killed in Parkland.

Shortly before the commission hearing in St Petersburg, students from Tampa Bay area schools spoke passionately in favour of additional gun regulations, as did the father of a student who attends Marjory Stoneman Douglas.
