Secretary Zinke explains $139K doors for secretary's office

Religious Leaders Across US Oppose Trump and Zinke Plans for Coastal Drilling

Another pricey remodeling decision bid for attention in the Trump administration after the Interior Department chose to replace three sets of doors at its historic headquarters for almost $139,000.

The Associated Press had first reported that the expenditure is supposed to be for three sets of double doors in Zinke's office. The project was planned by career facilities and security officials as part of the decade-long modernization of the historic building erected in 1936 a few blocks from the White House, she said.

"Between regulations that require historic preservation and outdated government procurement rules, the costs for everything from pencils to printing to doors is astronomical", Swift said in a statement, according to AP. "This is a flawless example of why the secretary believes we need to reform procurement processes". Nassar said bottom panels of the old doors had been temporarily fixed with cardboard and duct tape and were replaced by fiberglass doors with new locks. Last November his department's Deputy Inspector General Mary Kendall wrote in a letter to Zinke's office that an investigation into his travel expenses had been held up because of "incomplete documentation" for several trips he took.

According to records posted online, the project - described as "Secretary's Door" - cost $138,670, and are to carried out by a Maryland company called Conquest Solutions.

Facing mounting pressure from fellow Republicans who see little constituent support for drilling off the Atlantic Coast, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke could be backpedaling on the Trump administration's initial plans to expand the program, Republican lawmakers said.

The Interior Department spent about $139,000 for construction on an office door. A third opens to a hallway that features painted portraits of previous Interior secretaries.

The project has been planned for nearly two years.

Zinke has been criticized in the past for questionable spending of taxpayer money.
