Sooners' baseball coach Skip Johnson statement on Augie Garrido's death

Texas head coach Augie Garrido walks out to field before the start of the game to gather his team

He won two championships at Texas and three more over two stints at Cal State Fullerton.

"We lost one of the greatest coaches of all time, a truly special Longhorn Legend and college athletics icon", Del Conte said. He won five championships in all, having won with Cal State Fullerton in 1979, 1984 and 1995.

"This is a dark day for our sport", Childress said.

In 1975, the Titans stunned the college baseball world by advancing to the College World Series in their first season in Division I. In their first regional playoff game, they upset USC, the school with the most championships in college baseball history. Wood famously walked by Garrido and pitching coach Skip Johnson after one of his innings and said, "Don't you even think about taking me out of his game". "His impact on baseball, on the Forty Acres, and on me and so many others will live on forever". My thoughts are with (his wife) Jeannie, his friends, his family, and all those who were lucky enough to have met him, played for him, or learned from him. I'll never forget Garrido's response when I asked him about that notion.

Garddio reached the College World Series just one time in his final five years with the Longhorns, and stepped down following a rare losing season in 2016. In 2009, Texas pitcher Austin Wood throw 12 ⅓ innings of scoreless relief in a 25 inning win against Boston College.

Garrido coached Cal Poly to an 84-63-1 record from 1970-72, which included a 39-11-1 campaign in 1971. "That's the baby that created all this for me", Garrido said of Fullerton. "Augie Garrido was the godfather of college baseball". "That just tells you what kind of a great man he is, to bring up something I did against him, that just tells you what kind of a great human he is". "There was an expectation that the program was moving in an upward direction when I came here, and Augie was a person that had a great impact on that". "When their dad would come home from a tough loss, the kids don't care if we won or lost, they just wanted to hang out with dad. He will be deeply missed by myself and many others".

Response to Garrido's passing from former players and coaching peers poured in from around the country.

When Fullerton returned to the College World Series in 2016, Garrido reminisced on the program he contributed to fostering. Garrido played five seasons in the Cleveland Indians farm system, rising as high as the Triple-A level. After winning the 2005 National Championship, one of the first things Garrido mentioned during his postgame speech on ESPN was that he was looking for a new shortstop to replace the graduating Seth Johnston. He was one of three coaches named to the College World Series Legends Team in 2010.

UCLA baseball head coach John Savage said matching wits with Garrido was a mind-bending challenge. In May of that year, Garrido received an Ellis Island Medal of Honor from the National Ethnic Coalition of Organizations for his lifelong commitment to hard work and sacrifice. He was inducted into the CSUF Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005.
