Tiger Woods, Ernie Els to be named 2019 Presidents Cup captains

Report Tiger Woods Ernie Els to be named 2019 Presidents Cup captains

South African Ernie Els will be captain of the worldwide team for next year's Presidents Cup at Royal Melbourne Golf Club in Australia, a source told Reuters on Monday.

The Presidents Cup, which began in 1994, was a way to include players from outside of Europe in a Ryder Cup-style event, will be played for the third time at Royal Melbourne in Australia - the site of the only global victory, in 1998, when Woods played the competition for the first time.

The 42-year-old is in the field at this week's Arnold Palmer Invitational in Florida and said he won't turn his attention to next month's US Masters until after this week's event where he is seeking an incredible ninth victory at the famous Bay Hill layout. Woods and Els offer two of the highest-caliber names in golf. In 2003, the four-time major victor dueled with Woods during a tiebreaker that was called off due to bad light, leading to a shared trophy.

Woods and Els have represented their teams eight times in competition, and both served as assistants for their respective captains - Steve Stricker and Nick Price - past year in New Jersey.

"I wouldn't want to have the conversation, you know, and go, 'Self, '" he said, laughing.

Woods, who has launched a comeback after his spinal fusion surgery a year ago, finished joint runner-up by one shot last week at the Valspar Championship.

At the top of the question list was whether either had given any thought to being playing captains.

Regardless of whether he would be playing or leading as a non-playing captain, Woods has "got a good feel of the team room", Furyk said.

"Ernie Els and Tiger Woods have each been part of the fabric of the Presidents Cup as competitors and as ambassadors to the event", said PGA TOUR Commissioner Jay Monahan.

Mission 2019: Sonia Gandhi hosts dinner to opposition parties
Congress party former chief Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday hosted dinner for leaders from the opposition parties. He also said the leaders reflected tremendous positive energy, warmth and genuine affection.

"I think it's huge for two reasons".

The two players infamously went head-to-head in a play-off in the 2003 Presidents Cup after the match ended in a 17-17 tie.

"And in doing so, they're likely going to be bringing forward future stars".

According to the AP report, Woods will lead the United States into battle against an worldwide side captained by Ernie Els.

"It's just a matter of time before I put it all together".

"We're still nearly two years out", Woods pointed out regarding whether his schedule would change or with whom he might play practice rounds.

The Presidents Cup has found tremendous corporate support with Italian carmaker Alfa Romeo, Citibank and Rolex, but the matches lack a competitive balance. In the past, the top 10 players on the FedExCup points list have qualified for that year's USA team, and the top 10 in world rankings have qualified for the worldwide team. Each captain will now have four at-large picks, up from two - meaning eight players will automatically qualify following the Tour Championship.

Els, who holds the course record (60) and has won three times at Royal Melbourne, made one thing clear.
