United States Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has been forced to cancel today's activities in Kenya because he might be feeling unwell.

Secretary Tillerson thanked Chairman Faki and the AU for its continued attention to and good work across the Continent and underscored the strong U.S. -AU bilateral relationship.

Mahamat also disclosed that following the remark, which was viewed as "offensive and insensitive to Africa", Trump wrote a letter to him and that he copied all the leaders of Africa.

Despite the trip to Africa, Tillerson is said to also be involved in behind the scenes discussions on a possible meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.

"I reiterate our desire for more African nations to apply concrete diplomatic and economic pressure on North Korea", Tillerson said.

"So there is no monopoly".

Mr Tillerson, however, critised Kenya for "shutting down TV stations" - referring to the authorities' decision to take television channels off air at the end of January to prevent them from airing Raila Odinga's mock swearing-in ceremony as "people's president".

"They are badly needed".

He however claimed that the U.S. is not trying to stop African countries from receiving money from China.

According to the top USA diplomat, Chinese investments "do not bring significant job creation locally".

If a government accepts a Chinese loan and "gets into trouble", he said, it can "lose control of its own infrastructure or its own resources through default". "It is important that African countries carefully consider the terms of those agreements and not forfeit their sovereignty".

He said US welcomed Chinese participation, but hoped they would follow worldwide rules, global norms, and respect the sovereignty of countries.
