United Nations seeks almost $1 billion for Rohingyas who fled Myanmar

The head of the United Nations refugee agency, Filippo Grandi, told reporters that the immediate concern was mobilizing life-saving aid for refugees, especially with monsoon season approaching and tens of thousands of people living in areas prone to landslides and floods.

Lee told the Human Rights Council that violent sweeps by the Myanmar army in Rakhine state that prompted about 700,000 Rohingya Muslims to flee to neighboring Bangladesh "bear the hallmarks of genocide".

The Myanmar government has repeatedly denied accusations of genocide or ethnic cleansing against the Rohingya people, with U Aung Tun Thet, the chief coordinator of the Myanmar government body dedicated to the Rohingya crisis, saying that "we are not involved in anything at all", the New York Times reported. He added that if the countries unite, the pressure will be put on Myanmar to create a safe condition for the voluntary return of the community.

The UN has appealed for $951 million to meet the needs of almost 900,000 Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.

"We considered that the time is now appropriate to invite UNHCR and UNDP to be involved in the repatriation and resettlement process, as well as in carrying out activities supporting the livelihoods and development for all communities in Rakhine state", Myint Thu said.

Khonmoh encounter ends: 2 militants' bodies recovered from gutted houses
A report from Khonmoh said that clashes between stone-throwing youth and security forces erupted soon after the encounter started. While Khan escaped the attack unhurt, his PSO, constable Bilal Ahmad, was injured in the incident, the official added.

The Myanmar government said the 374 repatriated refugees would be placed in the temporary housing camps they have built - which Human Rights Watch described as "open air prisons" - for no longer than a month and would then be allowed to return to either their original villages, or close by.

Myanmar has said it is willing to take back fewer than 400 Rohingya refugees of the 8,000 who have said they would voluntarily return from Bangladesh. But most people in majority-Buddhist Myanmar consider them to be unwanted Muslim immigrants from Bangladesh.

He's vowed to raise the situation in Rakhine state but did not use the term Rohingya during a press statement on Friday.

Najib said Malaysia was ready to assist in finding "a just and durable solution", while urging Southeast Asian nations to work closely to deter any extremist threats.

Myanmar's government on Tuesday rejected two reports presented to the U.N. Human Rights Council that concluded it committed extreme human rights violations, probably amounting to crimes under global law, in its repression of several minority groups, reports AP.
