Watch as Betsy Devos Completely Flops in Her '60 Minutes' Interview

DeVos There is an ‘urgency’ in solving gun violence

"I'm not so sure exactly how that happened".

Elizabeth Mann, an education expert with the Brookings Institution, said that DeVos' failure to tour struggling schools undermines her credibility as an advocate for the children that they serve. Stahl: The public schools here are doing worse than they did.

DeVos commented on sexual assault in education, arming teachers to prevent school shootings, and struggling schools in her home state. Since World War II, the number of students in American public schools has climbed by 96 percent, according to U.S. News.

She also said has "not intentionally" visited a low-performing school - and when Stahl suggested she should, DeVos agreed, saying, "Maybe I should, yes".

Unfortunately for DeVos, the same data suggests that charter schools in MI are doing worse over time. Elizabeth Warren, Massachusetts Democrat, said "she needs to be held accountable".

'Have you seen the really bad schools?

"The whole state is not doing well", Stahl pushed.

When pressed by Stahl about institutional racism and for more specifics on why she thinks the rule needs to be rolled back, DeVos twice repeated the "opportunity to learn" line.

DEVOS: Maybe I should. Yes.

Her performance got panned in multiple media outlets.

"Arguably, all of these issues or all of this issue comes down to individual kids", Devos said, to which Stahl replied, "Well, no ... it's not".

"I don't know, I don't know. I'm committed to a process that's fair for everyone involved".

'That should be an option for states and communities to consider.

Ms. DeVos released the original video afterward showing that she did respond, telling the audience that she had written many checks over the years to support school choice and that "the balance on my income has gone very much the other way".

She then changed tack again, adding, "but for those who are capable, this is one solution that can and should be considered, but no one size fits all". "No one size fits all". "Well, there are certainly pockets where ... students are doing well", DeVos said. She's not likely to grant many interviews after last night. "I think probably there, I would imagine that there is probably a gun in the schools to protect from potential grizzlies", she had said.

The administration says Education Secretary Betsy DeVos will chair a Federal Commission on School Safety that will look into issues including mental health programs, background checks, school discipline programs, violent video games, and the impact of press coverage, the Washington Post reports.

The president has called for giving teachers concealed carry permits, but not necessarily assault weapons.
