World Health Organisation warns of mystery killer Disease X

What is Disease X

The goal of adding Disease X is not to scare people, but to ensure that the global health officials build the resilience and are prepared for all threads, not just the predictable ones.

As far as the World Health Organization (WHO) is concerned, there's a looming threat of an as-yet-unknown worldwide epidemic - one that could potentially be deadly.

The illness - now given the name Disease X - has the potential to spread quickly, and any cures or countermeasures are now severely lacking. The experts at World Health Organization (WHO) have recently warned about newfound pathogens that may have the ability to trigger a worldwide epidemic. Experts believe that this unknown pathogen may go unnoticed until it is too late when it has already spread to all nooks of the globe, taking the world by surprise.

Disease X is only different because it hasn't emerged or been identified yet. Along with the diseases - Ebola, SARS Zika and the disease is now added by the World Health Organization in the list of maladies including nine lethal diseases.

However, this year a mystery pathogen has been added to the watch list for the first time. The decision is rooted in the belief that humanity has learned a thing or two from its past experiences with global pandemics, and that it's crucial to anticipate what could be and prepare accordingly.

Why include Disease X on the deadly disease list?

Arms imports to Middle East jump 103 percent in 5 years
China was the fifth largest arms exporter, with Pakistan the main recipient of its arms . Indonesia increased its arms imports by 193 per cent between 2008-12 and 2013-17.

"It may seem unusual to be adding an "X" but the point is to make sure we prepare and plan flexibility in terms of vaccines and diagnostic tests", the scientist explained, speaking to The Telegraph. But there are a multitude of possible sources, including existing viruses that have demonstrated new virulence and new symptoms (as in Zika) but also escaped viruses from laboratories or used as biological weapons, or zoonoses - which relate to diseases and infections that can be transmitted from animals to humans directly or indirectly.

"This is not an exhaustive list, nor does it indicate the most likely causes of the next epidemic", the World Health Organization said.

And the creation a year ago in Canada of horsepox - a close relative of the deadly smallpox virus - has heightened fears that Disease X could come out of a renegade laboratory.

Whatever the case may be, the WHO hopes its list will spur governments across the globe to invest more into strengthening local health systems.

"It's a natural process and it is vital that we are aware and prepare".

"It is probably the greatest risk".
