8-year-old boy slashes students with knife at elementary school

BABES IN THE WOODS Students at Woodson Branch Nature School spend hours outdoors every day engaging in group activities along with unstructured play. Director Deborah De Lisle says the school’s approach to learning results in engaged and creative kids

Sauk Rapids Police Chief Perry Beise says the boy randomly cut three children at Pleasantview Elementary School on Monday morning, then went into the office and set the knife down.

A knife attack by a Minnesota school student injured three other students Monday.

The child was taken into custody but released later that day.

Interim Superintendent Bruce Watkins called the incident "unfortunate". Once the police arrived, the assailant was in the school counselor's office while the victims received medical care in the nurse's office. The case will be forwarded to prosecutors, KARE said.

Beise says authorities don't file charges against children that young, they instead try to get them help. "It's also possible that human services will become involved in some way".

Oak Grove Academy is a therapeutic program serving students from Forest Grove, Banks, and Hillsboro School Districts with social-emotional needs, behavioral concerns, and developmental disabilities.

One of the injured children is a seventh-grader who was waiting to catch a transfer bus.

The Minnesota elementary school student used a similar knife to attack his classmates.

The elementary school was one of 10 schools in the state picked this year to have supplies donated, MCSD officials said. Sauk Rapids is about an hour outside Minneapolis. The attacker is 8 years old.

Pleasantview has students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade.

Weapons in schools and school security have been ongoing issues in the U.S. In December 2012, Adam Lanza, 20, shot his mother to death at their Newtown, Connecticut, home before killing 20 first-graders and six educators at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
