Acting Cambridge Analytica CEO steps down amid Facebook scandal

It was Democratic Rep. Anna Eshoo of Palo Alto who asked Zuckerberg if his own information had been compromised in the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

By the time of the hearing's first break, Facebook's share price had risen by 5% - adding £3bn to his net worth.

Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom had the highest share of respondents - about 33 percent - who say that Facebook is having a "negative impact on society," according to McGinn's new survey.

Many questions focused on Cambridge Analytica, which gathered data several years ago through a personality quiz created by an academic researcher.

Details on the data Facebook gave to Russian Federation.

In the wake of the massive leak of user information to Cambridge Analytica, which worked for Donald Trump's 2016 campaign, Zuckerberg reiterated that the company had shut down the pipeline that allowed data - including his own - to slip without consent into the hands of third parties. "In retrospect it was clearly a mistake to believe them", he said.

Schatz then asked whether private messages are informing the ads people see and whether browsing habits and likes are being collected, to which Zuckerberg claimed: "I'm not sure I fully understand this". One said information was likely shared after a friend logged in and another said they were not affected.

For many questions, Zuckerberg said he would need to consult with his team to provide answers - at times exhibiting a surprising lack of familiarity with the privacy debate that has sprung up around his company's activities ...

Dingell expressed frustration with Zuckerberg's frequent promises to get back to lawmakers later in writing.

On a question if Facebook has a political bias, he said the platform's goal was not to engage in political speech.

The social network replies, "No. Facebook is a free site and will never require that you pay to continue using the site". Extreme opinions on sensitive issues can be used against you later in life and sometimes even drop you into lawsuits.

"Legislation in this Congress at this time is hard, but Zuckerberg's appearance certainly increased its probability", says Roslyn Layton, a visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute who served on President Trump's transition team for the Federal Communications Commission.

Mr Zuckerberg said the practice was meant to help prevent malicious actors from collecting public information from Facebook users, such as names. Zuckerberg said Facebook has "a lot of competitors" including "the other tech platforms, Google, Apple, Microsoft".

Yet in his testimony to the House Energy and Commerce Committee, he was also steadfast in arguing that Facebook's users themselves are choosing to make their data available and that the company's "opt-in" provisions offered them sufficient control.

"(It) suggests that a: "users are not in control, and b: "Facebook itself has lost control of the data", the former NSW deputy privacy commissioner told AAP on Thursday. I started Facebook, I run it, and, at the end of the day, I am responsible for what happens here. He said he was among the almost 87 million people whose personal information was improperly shared with political consultancy Cambridge Analytica.

During the hearing, Facebook shares made a noticeable jump, gaining 4.5 percent, adding $20 billion to its market cap - the biggest daily gain in almost two years. The House committee Chairman Greg Walden told reporters he would discuss with his committee holding similar hearings with other technology chief executives. He did not name specific companies.
