Arsenal's Away Record In 2018 Is Utterly Dreadful

Jamaal Lascelles of Newcastle United celebrates after he scores the winning goal during the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Stoke City at St. James Park on September 16

Arsenal's miserable away form in the Premier League this year continued on Sunday as they went down 2-1 at Newcastle United.

Goals from Ayoze Perez and Matt Ritchie ensured the Gunners have lost five in a row on their travels for the first time since December 1984.

The defeat means Arsenal remain the only Premier League side to not pick up a single point away from home in 2018, losing each of their last five games on the road in the competition.

The Gunners are now sixth in the Premier League, 13 points behind fourth-placed Tottenham and only two clear of seventh-placed Burnley, though they do have a game in hand on the Clarets.

Arsene Wenger believes the Premier League is "behind the rest of the world" following the decision not to implement VAR in next season's top flight.

Kenedy tested Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Cech with a long-range effort which skidded across the slick St James' Park turf four minutes later, but it was the Gunners who struck first with 14 minutes gone.

"We concede two goals from nowhere". Overall we played with a good spirit but with a bad result.

"But I felt overall today the fact we played on Thursday night, in the second half we couldn't raise the tempo and keep it up in the first half".

With Atletico Madrid to face in the semi-finals of the Europa League, Wenger will have to tighten things up at the back.

Mohamed Elneny fired wide and Iwobi saw his late effort blocked as the Gunners threw bodies forward, but it wasn't to be as Newcastle held on for their fourth league win in a row.

When Arsenal signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January, it didn't seem to bode well for Lacazette whose inconsistency had already put him under pressure.

Wenger, who was also unhappy with a challenge by Magpies midfielder Kenedy on Alexandre Lacazette, added: "Every big game this season has been decided by mistakes that could have been avoided with VAR".

Asked about Arsenal's wretched away form, Wenger said: "It's a lot about the head and sometimes there is no rationality in it. It has a subconscious weight in our mind".
