Canelo Alvarez Receives Six Month Suspension

Golovkin Takes

The ruling means it is likely Alvarez will reschedule his rematch with Gennady Golovkin on the weekend of Mexican Independence in September. The commission unanimously voted to hand Alvarez a six-month suspension during a hearing on April 18.

The unbeaten WBA, WBC and IBF middleweight champion will defend his titles against Vanes Martirosyan on 5 May at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

Middleweight boxer Saul "Canelo" Alvarez has been suspended for six months for a failed test for steroids, pushing the date for a rematch with Gennady Golovkin further back. "Nevada deputy attorney general Caroline Bateman described Alvarez as 'very professional'".

However, Robert Bennett of the NSAC said in the complaint that "Alvarez's utilization, ingestion and/or consumption of Clenbuterol, whether intentional or not, constitutes an anti-doping violation". "He is ready to continue his remarkable record of fighting at the highest level".

As previously reported, Canelo tested positive for the banned PED clenbuterol twice, which his camp says is credited to him eating contaminated beef. The World Anti-Doping Agency also issued a warning for athletes in 2011 to "exercise extreme caution" when consuming meat in China or Mexico.

The suspension is back-dated to February 17, the date of Alvarez's first positive test.

Alvarez was scheduled to fight Golovkin on that date, but the bout was canceled earlier this month when it became apparent that Alvarez would not be cleared from a pair of failed drug tests in time.

Besides the suspension, Alvarez agreed to pay for and provide the commission with negative drug test results of his urine. both in competition and out of competition, before his next fight in Nevada.
