Commonwealth Games 2018: Manika Batra- Sathiyan Gnanasekaran bag table tennis mixed bronze

Manika Batra and Mouma Das

Batra, who already scripted history by becoming the first Indian gold women to win gold in singles competition shined once last time on the final day of CWG. India's medal tally now moves to 54 including 24 gold, 13 silver and 17 bronze as they maintain their third position in the CWG 2018 medal table and team standings behind Australia and England.

There was further disappointment for India as Pooja Sahasrabudhe and Sutirtha Mukherjee lost the bronze medal play-off match to Malaysia's Ying Ho and Karen Lyne in four tough games.

But what caught the imagination of table tennis fans at Gold Coast was her brilliant win in the women's singles final.

Gold Coast: Manika Batra's sensational run at the Common-wealth Games culminated with a fourth medal in as many events while India emerged as the best table tennis nation with a record eight medals including three gold.

Saina Nehwal became the first Indian to win two singles Golds at the Games after defeating PV Sindhu.

"To be Commonwealth Games champion is something I never really dreamed of; well it is actually it is something I always dreamed of, but it is something I never thought was possible".

Manika Batra's multiple gold medal-winning feat made sure that she will be spoken of as the girl who inspired a whole generation of youngsters to take to the sport.

They needed just 42 minutes to demolish the challenge of the Sri Lankans and get in the reckoning for India's first-ever men's doubles medal in badminton at the Games.

While the spotlight has been on young Manika, seasoned Sharath Kamal too had a successful campaign here as he won three medals, one gold, one silver and one bronze.

India's women's hockey team turned in an embarrassing performance in the bronze medal round against England and was thrashed 6-0. She blanked Yu Mengyu of Singapore 4-0 in the final here on Saturday.

Joshna Chinappa and Dipika Pallikal had to settle to silver in the final of the women's doubles squash losing to New Zealand's Joelle King and Amanda Landers- Murphy.
