Lawmakers grilled Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg on Wednesday over the social networking giant's repeated data privacy problems and subsequent apologies.

"What we saw at these hearings is that he is resisting changing the business model of Facebook, which is based entirely on harvesting user data and taking that data and use that data to help target ads", David McCabe, a tech reporter with Axios, told Al Jazeera. "I've been on Facebook a long time now and all the pictures that I've posted are there and all the things that I've commented on are there and all the blog posts that I've put up were all there". "We're working on doing that as quickly as possible". The social media platform was expected to hit bearish territory prior to the two-day hearing.

Despite being the head honcho, Zuckerberg himself also revealed that he was included in the data "sold to the malicious third parties", which likely isn't surprising given that pretty much every user on the platform was affected. All this information then is mixed using some secret and powerful algorithms that create your Facebook profile.

Republican congressman Fred Upton cited an example of a Michigan Republican whose campaign page was removed from Facebook.

The plain black text apology on a white background, with only a tiny Facebook logo, appeared in Sunday publications including The Observer - one of the newspapers whose reporting on the issue has sent Facebook's share price tumbling. And while there are grey areas and nuances here, Facebook is right by and large.

In a recent poll conducted by Recode, people were asked which company they trusted the least with their personal data.

John Shimkus, a Republican from IL, asked Zuckerberg whether users are tracked when they are logged out of Facebook. And it does so without their permission.

Zuckerberg tried to defend the Facebook policy on this tracking of all internet users and not just Facebook users by saying that everyone does it and that this is how the ad industry works. The U.S. lawmakers are still yet to release their general consensus. One of them, Representative Ben Lujan, came down hard on Zuckerberg. "Your user agreement sucks".

On Friday night, investigators from Britain's data watchdog searched the London offices of Cambridge Analytica for several hours. In contrast to the information that users (more or less) willingly share, the vast majority of users have no idea that such data even exists. The social media network also confirmed that the consolidated app controls would roll out for all users immediately. This means that these apps and websites could have access to the data you have previously shared, but any further data will not be shared as the connection is expired. While Facebook continues to insist that this remains an "opt-in" feature, the fact is that the app's set-up process doesn't really clarify that at first glance.
