Facebook to Introduce an "Unsend" Messages Feature

Facebook to Introduce an

It's safe to assume anything you've ever sent or shared via Facebook still lives on its servers. unless you're Mark Zuckerberg.

According to TechCrunch, Facebook now intends on implementing an "unsend" feature in the next few months, which would allow users to remove sent messages from people's inboxes. This may take some time.

The feature was announced after it was revealed that the company had deleted Mark Zuckerberg's messages sent on Messenger.

Facebook says page administrators and advertisers will be verified by being asked to provide a government-issued ID.

In the wake of the TechCrunch report, the company said Facebook plans to make the feature available more widely and will pause Zuckerberg and the other executives' use of them.

"Until this feature is ready, we will no longer be deleting any executives' messages".

Facebook is tightening restrictions around its massive ad business, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg announcing on Friday that all advertisers running "political or issue ads" will need to be verified by the social network. "We should have done this sooner - and we're sorry that we did not".

This, she said, was also why Facebook didn't let users know their data had been compromised two years ago.

The announcement caps a week of high drama for Facebook, which has dispatched senior executives to reassure users, advertisers, and lawmakers that it's stepping up efforts to protect privacy and owning up to instances where it failed to safeguard people's data. It has not specified what number of followers would trigger the requirement.

For the first time, it has also backed proposed legislation requiring social media sites to disclose the identities of buyers of online political campaign ads.

The move is meant to clamp down on fake pages and accounts that were used to disrupt the 2016 presidential elections in the US.

London-based Cambridge Analytica, which has counted US President Donald Trump's 2016 campaign among its clients, said on Wednesday on Twitter that it had received no more than 30 million records from a researcher it hired to collect data about people on Facebook.

"What I think people should hold us accountable for is if we are learning from our mistakes", he said.

New rules and additional scrutiny for Canadian political actors also could indirectly help to limit foreign interference.

Starting at the end of October 2017, officials from Facebook (and Google and Twitter) testified in front of Congress about possible Russian election meddling enabled by their platforms.

The audit of Cambridge Analytica is on hold, in deference to a United Kingdom investigation, however Facebook has been conducting a broader review of its own practices and how other third-party apps use data. In addition, all of the 87 million users who may have had their data shared with Cambridge Analytica will get a more detailed message containing more information about how their data was used.
