Facebook's Sandberg Says 'A Few' Advertisers Paused Spending

Facebook Ads

In chat, messages disappear after all parties have read them.

Facebook Canada said on Wednesday that more than 600,000 Canadians had their data "improperly shared" with Cambridge Analytica. Facebook estimates that up to 70.6 million USA users were affected, so that would work out to more than $70 billion.

CEO Mark Zuckerberg is scheduled to testify in front of a Congressional committee later this month regarding the data collection. The company is also facing an investigation by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission.

Beyond the dubious ethics of Facebook manipulating users' private messaging threads without consent or disclosure, Zuckerberg and other executives, there's the question of whether and unsend feature is good for Facebook at all. People are inputting data.

The NHS illegally handed the data of more than 1.5m patients to Google's artificial intelligence company DeepMind, the Information Commissioner's Office found previous year, during testing on kidney injuries.

Separately, Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg offered fresh apologies to users for failing to do enough on privacy and data protection.

A lawsuit filed in San Diego this week names Facebook, Cambridge Analytica, researcher Aleksandr Kogan and Bannon as defendants.

"What we didn't do is the next step of an audit and we're trying to that now", she said.

Cambridge Analytica says it only ever received data on 30 million users.

The measure is already in place for political ads, and comes as Facebook tries to clamp down on outside election interference ahead of this year's United States mid-terms and upcoming political contests around the world.

In February, Bon-Ton announced it had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection and was seeking a possible buyer of assets. Bon-Ton is in active discussions with an investor group to acquire the Company in a court-supervised sale process.

"Any advertiser who doesn't pass will be prohibited from running political or issue ads", Mr Zuckerberg wrote. The issue ads requirement is new.

On top of that, Facebook will require the admins of all "large pages" to be verified. The company did not say what this number would be.

Earlier this year, the IRA was charged with waging "information warfare" against the U.S.in an indictment by special counsel Robert Mueller's team, which has been investigating Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election.

Advertisers will need to confirm their identity and location in order to get a blue verification badge. This does not mean the company is planning to let users do this.

But tampering with users' inboxes without disclosure has struck many users a violation of Facebook's power.

"It is reasonable to expect... someone has accessed your information in this way", he added. Over the past three weeks, the scandal has continued to spiral.

The legislation would expand existing election law covering television and radio outlets to apply to paid internet and digital advertisements on platforms like Facebook, Twitter Inc and Alphabet Inc's Google.

Most people understand that when sending a text message, through Messenger or pretty much any other messaging service, it stays out there until when and if the recipient decides to delete it.

Last night, Facebook revealed that it was purging old messages sent to Facebook friends on the Messenger app.
