Federal Bureau of Investigation raids offices of Trump's personal lawyer

Trump called the raid against his lawyer an "attack on our country in a true sense".

Cohen's attorney, Stephen Ryan, says agents seized privileged communications between Cohen and his clients.

Third, while attorney-client privilege shields many forms of communication between a lawyer and his or her client, it doesn't shield everything.

As news of the raid on his personal attorney unfolded, Trump followed cable news reports, and privately griped about Rosenstein, who also oversees the special counsel investigation into Russia's interference in the 2016 campaign.

The fraud claims prompted speculation that he may have misled banks over the reason for the large payment, made shortly before the president won the 2016 USA election. Even the Trump-friendly Drudge Report ran a banner headline: "PRESIDENCY UNDER SIEGE". To obtain one, agents must convince a judge they have probable cause of criminal activity and they believe they'll find evidence of wrongdoing in a search.

The Cohen raids required high-level authorization within the Justice Department.

Many independent legal experts believe that Trump would have to order Rod Rosenstein, the deputy Attorney General, who is overseeing the Russian Federation investigation, to terminate Mueller.

In this case, Mueller opted to refer the matter to federal prosecutors in Manhattan. "You'll have to ask Michael Cohen", about it, he told reporters.

The president's personal lawyer was cooperating with the Mueller investigation and had turned over thousands of pages of documents.

Under federal regulations, if Mr Mueller comes across information that is not directly related to his Russia-focused investigation, he must confer with Mr Rosenstein. Prosecutors may also attempt to use Mr. Cohen's growing legal woes as leverage to turn him into a co-operating witness against Mr. Trump. Pressed on this claim, she said, "We have been advised that the President certainly has the power to make that decision". Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, has said she had sex with Trump in 2006. "Factor in that, in this instance, it was the president's own attorney". McDougal now believes that Davidson was more concerned with Cohen and Trump's interests than her own.

Several former officials at the Federal Election Commission have said the payment appears to be a violation of campaign finance laws, and multiple Washington-based groups have filed complaints with the FEC, urging it to investigate. Whatever the subject matter of this particular investigation, it apparently falls outside of Mueller's jurisdiction and thus resulted in his referral to the NY prosecutors.

For the last several months, the Trump legal team has been having active negotiations with the Mueller team working toward a potential interview, which would include either a face-to-face interview with parameters, a written questionnaire or some mix of both, sources have told ABC News.

A former senior Federal Bureau of Investigation official told DailyMail.com on Monday that if Cohen meant to help President Trump win the 2016 election when he made the payment, the money could be considered an "in-kind contribution" to his political campaign.

"So much Fake News about what is going on in the White House".

In 2016, Cohen paid Daniels $130,000 in exchange for signing a nondisclosure agreement which she is now seeking to have invalidated. "Michael is my attorney. And I thanked them at the conclusion", Cohen told CNN. He sent similar demand letters to two banks, City National and First Republic, asking they preserve documents connected to the transaction. Legal pundits on TV have all said that Cohen could be pressured to testify against Trump in return for leniency on charges that are unrelated to his relationship to the president.

Federal agents searched Cohen's office at 30 Rockefeller Plaza in NY, where he had been working as part of a "strategic partnership" with the law firm Squire Patton Boggs.
