GTA V Is Now The Highest Grossing Media Title In History

Rockstar Games' Grand Theft Auto 5 is now the best-selling entertainment product in history, eclipsing any medium. V at launch for the 360, and with all the changes, bannings, rollbacks and the like, it completely lost its appeal for me long before it was launched for PC. By including a story mode that features three of the most memorable video game characters the series has ever released (which is a feat in itself), implementing addicting online play, and letting users do whatever the hell they want. "It fuels this virtuous cycle". GTA Online cash cards no doubt have added considerably to the profits of the title in recent years which probably puts the "total haul" higher than $6 billion.

It takes the combined sales of GTA III (17.5m), Vice City (20m), San Andreas (27.5m) and GTA IV (25m) match GTA V's figures, and those games are hardly low sellers. For a video game title to make twice what the top film of all time has made is unprecedented, and GTA 5 even comes out ahead of Star Wars and Gone With The Wind, which are said to have made around $3 billion when adjusted for inflation. A year later it hit the PS4 and Xbox One.

The image located below is taken from the Market Watch article, it shows in detail just how big GTA V really is compared other forms of media. And this means that some music licenses will expire and Rockstar will have to remove a bunch of tracks from the game's soundtrack.

The instalment is widely considered one of the best video games of all time. However, we won't find out if Rockstar will be able to recapture any of the remarkable achievements GTA V has had until Red Dead Redemption 2's launch, which is October 26th, 2018.
