Actor Harry Anderson died in Asheville on Monday, police confirmed to WSPA. Police were called to his home before 8 a.m. Monday morning. The sitcom was a mainstay of NBC from 1984 to 1992. He earned three Emmy nominations for his role.

Charles, at the time, was producing Cheers and asked Anderson to guest-star on the show as con man Harry "The Hat" Gittes.

Following Night Court, Anderson starred in the sitcom Dave's World, in which he played Dave Barry, the Miami Herald columnist on whom the show was based. He had parts in 30 Rock, Cheers, and The John Larroquette Show. He dabbled in political activism as well, taking aim at leaders in New Orleans for what he believed was mismanagement in the wake of Hurricane Katrina.

Born in Rhode Island, Anderson reportedly had a hard childhood and moved frequently with his mother, who he once described in an interview with Playboy as "a hustler". The son of a traveling salesman father and, in Anderson's own words when asked about his mother, "a hustler", Anderson was always on the move, having lived in over a dozen large cities by the time he was 16. Anderson worked as a street performer in San Francisco in his younger years before making his way up to L.A.'s Magic Castle in the early 80s. Anderson also wrote five episodes of Night Court, in addition to directing two episodes.

He also appeared on the series "Tales From The Crypt".

Genre fans will remember Anderson as Richie Tozier in the original 1990 TV miniseries for Stephen King's It.
