Israeli soldiers open fire on Gaza protesters third week in a row

Eyewitnesses said that dozens of Palestinian demonstrators managed to cut part of the fence of the border between eastern Gaza Strip and Israel.

Hamas has been leading demonstrations across the Israeli border with the Gaza Strip in a bid to stoke tensions with Israeli authorities and prompt a violent response.

Since the protests began on March 30, 34 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces firing live ammunition, tear gas and rubber-coated steel bullets at the demonstrators on the other side of the border.

Hundreds were wounded by Israeli forces over the course of the day, according to the Gaza Ministry of Health, near the borderline between Gaza and Israel on Friday as thousands gathered for the "Great March of Return" on behalf of the besieged enclave's 1.3 million refugees.

Marchers protest against a decade-old blockade and assert what they say is a "right of return" of Palestinian refugees to what is now Israel.

The official end date of the protests is May 15, when Palestinians mark the Nakba, or "catastrophe", commemorating the more than 700,000 who fled or were expelled during the 1948 war surrounding Israel's creation. After smaller groups approached the fence burning Israeli flags and tires and hurling stones, Israeli soldiers fired live bullets and tear gas. In addition to trying to cross the barrier, a number of attacks were carried out, with demonstrators throwing Molotov cocktails and explosives at Israeli soldiers.

The apologetic letter published by The Guardian was signed by four former Israeli combatants expressing their distress over the most recent killings of demonstrators in Gaza.

The young lady said she knows it is unsafe for her to be present at such a place, but she stressed that it is important for all women to champion their national causes. One man threw a burning tyre into the fence, while another was seen walking nearby with the help of a crutch.

The Palestinian Ministry of Health is reporting that over 500 Palestinians have been injured during today's protests, 122 by live fire.

The Palestinian Health Ministry said Islam Hirzallah, 28, was shot in the stomach east of Gaza City and died of his wounds.

An Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) official, speaking on condition of anonymity, refused to detail specific rules for engagement that admitted live sniper fire or say how many people had been shot.
