Just one alcoholic drink a day could shorten your life, study says

Study reveals sobering news on how much you should be drinking

Shawn Freeman, visiting from St. Louis, said other things influence how much he drinks, like his mood and whether he'll be driving.

The upper safe limit of drinking was about five drinks per week (100g of pure alcohol, 12.5 units or just over five pints of 4% ABV beer or five 175ml glasses of 13% ABV wine).

An analysis of almost 600,000 people found those drinking more than 100g of alcohol every week - around five 175ml glasses of wine or pints of beer - were at an increased risk of early death.

The researchers found a higher risk of stroke, heart failure and other problems in that group of heavier drinkers.

Even the most casual drinkers among us, including those following USA government recommendations, can see months and years taken away by steadily hitting the hooch, according to a new study by an global team of researchers.

Scientists are affirmative that FGF21 might someday be used as a drug to limit alcohol consumption and protect against its effects in people. More than that raises the risk of stroke, fatal aneurysm (a ruptured artery in the chest), heart failure and death.

Drinking more than one alcoholic beverage a day can take years off your life, a new worldwide study says.

Many people can drink far more than that in a single day.

Some experts even believe drinking excessive amounts of alcohol can be as damaging to your health as smoking.

Professor Bu Yeap, a co-author from the School of Medicine at the University of Western Australia, says the study is important as it analyses data from almost 600,000 people from all over the world.

Most Americans believe Holocaust could happen again
Visitors to the IL museum's Take a Stand Center first watch a five-minute film in which a survivor introduces him- or herself. In one part of the plaza, train tracks that carried prisoners to the Treblinka death camp will be embedded in the pavement.

It's official, everyone: We're drinking too much booze, and it's cutting us short of precious life.

Having as little as one alcoholic drink a day could shorten your life, according to a major new study.

However, higher levels of alcohol were also linked to a lower risk of heart attack, or myocardial infarction.

The authors suggest that the varying risk of different forms of cardiovascular disease could be down to the impact alcohol has on blood pressure and other facts linked to levels of HDL - or "good" - cholesterol. That interpretation is not likely to be welcomed by the alcohol industry, which has embraced the idea, backed by the medical establishment, that moderate drinking may be good for you by lowering the risk of a heart attack.

The study, which looked at data from 600,000 people in 19 countries, supported the UK's low safe-drinking limits.

The study doesn't take into account the possibility of accompanying mental disorders, such as dementia, which could explain why people reduced their alcohol consumption over the follow-up period.

People who follow government guidelines to have a drink or so a day could be drinking themselves into an early grave, researchers said Thursday.

This research recalibrates the concept of moderate drinking and gives a more complicated, nuanced interpretation of how alcohol affects cardiovascular health for better or worse.

Recommended drinking limits in the United States are now 98 grams for women and double for men - at two drinks per day - while limits in Italy, Spain and Portugal are nearly 50 percent higher.

Of course, you can be sure many will not be happy to read about these findings.
