No Video Assistant Referee system for 2018/19 English Premier League season

VAR will not be used in the Premier League next season

The league reported as much on their official website on Friday.

The testing will focus on how that can be improved and the Premier League hopes to see it used in the FA Cup and the Carabao Cup next term.

The decision from the Premier League follows UEFA's announcement that they will not be fast-tracking the system into the Champions League or Europa League next season.

The Premier League's clubs have opted for an additional season of review and experimentation - and also the use of VAR in both the League and FA Cups - ahead of potential implementation for the 2019-20 Premier League.

VARs are already being used in leagues, including the Bundesliga, and will be at the World Cup in Russian Federation.

'The clubs recognised and are grateful for the substantial developments made by PGMOL managing director Mike Riley and his team'.

"Premier League Clubs have today agreed to continue advanced testing of Video Assistant Referees (VAR) throughout the 2018/19 season", a statement read.

The decision to vote against the video technology was due to some notable high-profile problems with the new technology when it was used for matches in this season's FA Cup.

Despite having a goal ruled out, Mata was philosophical about the decision and gave VAR his backing.

Manchester United's FA Cup clash against Yeovil was controversial as an offside line was poorly drawn on screens shown, whilst Liverpool's FA Cup clash with West Bromwich Albion was marred with controversy regarding penalty decisions. It needed time and it will need time when we start within England.

VAR had a much quieter night when it made its debut at Old Trafford last month, as there was no need for referee Andre Marriner to refer to the system during the Reds' 2-0 quarter-final victory over Brighton.

The boss is broadly in agreement with the system and feels it is time for the match officials to receive some support.
