Pleasant Saturday, strong to severe storms possible Sunday

Students workers statewide to practice tornado drills during Severe Weather Awareness Week

It's going to be with us through Saturday night, bringing a risk of strong to severe storms with it. We expect 2-3 inches of rain to come down from this - which could prompt flooding Saturday afternoon through Sunday morning. Areas near the metro, far Southeastern Nebraska and Southwest Iowa have the greatest likelihood of seeing these storms develop and move through. This may cause some storm cells to rotate.

While the main concern is possible tornadoes, strong straight-line winds can also do extensive damage. This is when some isolated storms could develop. "The biggest threat is going to be the possibility for strong, damaging winds of 7o miles per hour or greater, with the added threat of possible tornadoes".

South Dakota Public Safety cautioned people to stay indoors during the severe winter weather.

Much of South Louisiana, including New Orleans, Baton Rouge and surrounding parishes, stands at an "enhanced" risk for severe thunderstorms beginning early Saturday. The cloud cover, humidity, and temperature all rose as expected this afternoon and will continue to do so through the night and into tomorrow.

Know the difference in a "watch" and a "warning". A warning is the time to take action, which mostly means getting away from windows toward the central part of the lowest level of your home or building.

A flash flood watch has been issued for southeast Louisiana, according to the National Weather Service.

Confidence is gradually increasing that damaging storms are becoming less likely this afternoon. Temperatures will fall from the 40s early in the day to the 20s by the evening hours. Be sure to download the WXOW Weather App for weather updates when you're on the go!
