Police to accept unwanted prescription drugs

National Drug Take Back Day: Sheriff's office to collect unused drugs April 28

The public is asked to bring any potentially risky, expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs free of charge and no questions asked.

For further information call the Milford Police Crime Prevention Unit at 203-874-2366 or visit the DEA website at dea.gov and click on "National Prescription Take-Back Day".

Last November, Americans nationwide did their part to reduce the opioid crisis by bringing the DEA and its more than 4,200 local and tribal law enforcement partners a record-setting 912,305 pounds - 456 tons - of potentially risky expired, unused and unwanted prescription drugs for disposal at more than 5,300 collection sites. This brings the total amount of prescription drugs collected by DEA since the fall of 2010 to 9,015,668 pounds or 4,508 tons.

During the October 2017 effort, MSP posts collected roughly 802 pounds of prescription drugs. Opioid prescription drugs essentially have the same chemical make-up as heroin, which means they affect the brain and body the same, and the play a large role in the opioid and heroin use and overdose epidemic that our county, as well as our country, is now facing. "This is a crisis that must be addressed from multiple angles".

Participants can dispose of their unneeded medication at participating drop-off locations across the United States.

MSP collection sites can be found here. Opioid addiction impacts Native American communities just as it does all parts of American society. There is also a misconception that prescription drugs are safer than illegal drugs because they are easily accessible in medicine cabinets and homes. Rates of prescription drug abuse in the USA are increasing, as are the number of accidental poisonings and overdoses due to these drugs.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's National Survey on Drug Use and Health shows year after year that the majority of misused and abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including someone else's medication being stolen from the home medicine cabinet.

"We know that over 70 percent of the people who start abusing prescription painkillers didn't get them from a doctor or from a traditional drug dealer on the street", said Schimel. Created to address "a crucial public safety and public health issue" - the program's website counts 6.4 million Americans who abuse prescription meds - the effort has proved extremely successful: The most recent take-back day in October 2017 saw some 4,274 law-enforcement agencies combine to collect more than 456 tons of unused and expired medications.
