Substitute teacher ran classroom 'fight club' at high school, CT police say

Outside court, 23-year-old Ryan Fish denied having any involvement with the alleged fight club during his time as a substitute teacher at Montville High School.

Fish was arrested on Thursday on multiple charges of reckless endangerment and risk of injuries to a child. He was sacked on October 10. Fish's bail was set at $75,000 and he was arraigned in Norwich Superior Court on Thursday.

Montville police said they began investigating in December after a student told a social worker that he suffered a beating in the classroom. Fish admitted to police that, starting in September, three or four scheduled fights were held between four boys, aged between 14 and 16.

"Anytime a student is put in any type of injurious situation they need to contact the police department", Juhola said.

"The truth is I'm an idiot and I wanted to befriend them", Fish told police in January, according to the report.

"I would say that I feel disgusting about what happened, to be honest with you", Fish said.

The ex-math teacher was also accused of allowing students to draw male genitals on the board and telling his class about how he would smoke marijuana. Another was taken to the hospital for a mental evaluation after showing symptoms in December of being traumatized, the warrant says.

In many of these taped matches, one teen would be considerably smaller than the other, according to The Courant. "I'm an idiot", he said, according to his arrest warrant.

But court documents show a different story.

The boy, whom police called Victim 1, reported that he had been robbed and beaten at Montville High by other students.

Fish was an extremely laid back teacher, some boys from the CT town told the police.

Victim 4 told Moorehead that in one instance, he was in Fish's class when victim 3 walked in and without any warning, hit him and "the fight was on".

On Dec. 18, a state police sergeant met with the superintendent and showed him a cellphone video from a concerned parent.

Police said the video also shows two students violently slapping each other while Fish stands behind his desk watching.

"My class will be getting a set of interactive calculators along with a teacher base and several other technology items that will allow students to engage and interact using their calculators, laptops, cell phones or iPads as we prepare for the state test", she said. "Had I known then, what I know now, yes, I should have contacted police".

When police obtained a warrant and reviewed the video clips, they saw what looked like two fights on two separate days. The videos reportedly contradicted Fish's claims of non-involvement: The educator was allegedly recorded counting down the fights, signaling "Round Two!", and instructing students to move away from the door. "Away from the door!" The fight didn't restart because the school bell rang.

Fish can be seen in one video positioning himself in front of the doorway leading to the hallway.

"I didn't necessarily let them do it".
