A link between brain injury and dementia has been confirmed by a study of nearly three million people.

However, the study results could lead people with TBI histories to change certain behaviors like alcohol and tobacco use, regular exercise and treating hypertension, diabetes and depression to limit other potential risk factors for dementia.

Dr Carol Routledge, director of research at Alzheimer's Research UK, said: "This well-conducted study adds significant weight to previous evidence of a link between head injury and an increased risk of dementia".

T.B.I. has a wide range of severity. "Our findings suggest that improved traumatic brain injury prevention programmes may have an opportunity to reduce the burden of dementia worldwide".

Findings from a review of almost 2.8 million patient cases in Denmark were published April 10 in The Lancet Psychiatry.

The study found that 5.3 percent of people with dementia had suffered at least one TBI.

According to its findings, the overall risk for dementia is 24 percent higher for those who have suffered a single TBI against individuals with no history of this type of injury.

A team from the University of Washington has found that the risk of dementia is significantly higher for people with a history of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) than for people with no history of TBI.

'There are 850,000 people with dementia - this number is set to rise to 1 million by 2021 and more research is urgently needed to fill the gaps in our understanding of lifestyle factors that increase dementia risk'.

Fann said future research trying to narrow down why some people with brain injuries get dementia while other don't is important. For example, a person who sustained a TBI in their 20s was 63% more likely to develop dementia 30 years later compared to someone who did not sustain such an injury in their 20s. Leading causes include falls, motor vehicle accidents, and assaults.

According to the study authors, more than 50 million people every year experience a traumatic brain injury.

Fann said it's important to recognize that most people who sustain a single concussion do not develop dementia. Between 1999 and 2013, 126,734 people (4.5%) aged 50 or older were diagnosed with dementia.

Measuring pupil reactivity to light could assist with treatment decisions for brain injuries, they say.

The study is being carried out by researchers at the Global Brain Health Institute (GBHI) at Trinity College Dublin, as part of a study in collaboration with Cambridge, Oxford, Edinburgh universities, Imperial College London in the United Kingdom and the Inserm Neuroscience in France.
