The 23-year-old, a four-time gold medal victor at the Commonwealth Games, said it was crucial for him to be open about his sexuality while competing in the Gold Coast, but warned that privilege was not guaranteed to other athletes the world over.

Recently, Tom Daley won a gold medal for synchronized diving at the Commonwealth Games.

Daley's win with Goodfellow came after the former revealed he nearly pulled out due to the hip injury that forced him to withdraw from the 10m individual.

He credited a relaxed lead-up in which he was able to soak up the Gold Coast sights and sounds with husband, Oscar winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black.

Daley, who pulled out of the 10m individual event because of a hip injury, is due to compete at the World Diving Series in Kazan, Russia in May.

He spoke of his hope that by the time of the next Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022 the attitude towards gay relationships in some of the competing nations would have improved.

Later he acknowledged: "You want to actually really feel comfortable in who you could be when you end up standing on that diving board and for 37 Commonwealth worldwide areas that are proper right here collaborating, that is not the case".

That said, many advocates from several Commonwealth countries are like Daley and are objecting to how fellow countries (or their own countries) are handling LGBTQ citizens.

Goodfellow, 21, said: "I dropped my sixth dive which is normally my best dive".

Pompeo: US airstrikes in February killed 'a couple hundred Russians'
He sought to pre-empt concerns about Trump's apparent unwillingness to challenge Russian President Vladimir Putin directly. If confirmed, Pompeo will replace Rex Tillerson, who was sacked by Trump in March.

The penalties for private, consensual sexual conduct between same-sex adults remain harsh in a number of Commonwealth countries, including imprisonment, hard labour and in some cases flogging.

But in other countries the situation for people who aren't heterosexual is getting worse.

Some progress is being made.

The first openly gay man to win Olympic gold back in 2008, Australia's Matthew Mitcham is Pride House's ambassador.

In Uganda, an act passed in 2014 increased sentencing for gay sex acts, and also criminalised civil movements relating to LGBT rights.

Daley, 23, said: 'I know this might sound a bit political but now there are 37 countries in the Commonwealth where it's illegal to be who I am. The couple announced in February they are expecting a baby but Daley admitted he still finds it hard to compete in countries where homosexuality is illegal.

In the decades since, the situation for gay people in the Commonwealth has evolved, with activists continuing to fight for change in countries where they face discrimination.

"There are lots of things that are going to take a long time to change, but I feel with the Commonwealth, we can really help push some of the other nations to relax their laws on anti-gay stuff".
