The Trump administration is considering a plan that would allow states to drug test some food stamp recipients. It wouldn't apply to everyone who gets food stamps - people with disabilities or with children would not be drug tested, according to the report. Trump administration proposes plan to replace food stampsTesting would apparently only affect about five percent of participants in the "supplemental nutrition assistance program".
This person spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss internal deliberations.
We hit the streets to see how people felt about it. "If you have a job you have to get drug tested, so why not when you get food stamps?" one resident said.
To understand this, criminal trial lawyer Spencer Cordell in Fort Myers said you need to understand the fourth amendment; the amendment that protects you from being searched for no reason, including your house, your vehicle, and your body.
"I would have done it a long time ago, but I don't know", said Lori McGhee.
"I got to eat, but I can't because I sold drugs".
But, not everyone agrees some citizens think the problem lies elsewhere.
"Most employers require drug tests, and you pay your taxes which funds these benefits, so why not make them take drug tests to receive benefits that people paying benefits have to go through?" another resident said.
Supporters of the move say it would help individual states get more flexibility in how they serve those in need and could save states money, while reducing drug dependency. At least 15 states have enacted, or attempted to enact, laws requiring recipients of food stamps or other forms of welfare to be drug tested.
