Trump Promises To Leave Marijuana To The States

"Since the campaign, President Trump has consistently supported states' rights to decide for themselves how best to approach marijuana", Gardner said in a statement on Friday.

While many states have decriminalized or legalized marijuana use, the drug is still illegal under federal law, which created a conflict between federal and state law.

The announcement has potential implications for all states with or considering legalized marijuana, as Trump also said he would support legislative solutions to solidifying cannabis policy as a state-by-state issue, not a federal one.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said during Friday's press briefing that the president spoke with Gardner today and yesterday.

The Washington Post first reported the agreement with the White House.

Gardner was furious at Sessions for his move - and critics, like Gardner, argued the move violates states' rights and causes uncertainty in legal marijuana industries. "The statement that the senator put out today is accurate".

Gardner has been pushing to reverse a decision made by Attorney General Jeff Sessions in January that removed prohibitions that kept federal prosecutors from pursuing cases against people who were following pot laws in states such as Colorado that have legalised the drug.

"The people of MA have voted to make marijuana legal under state law and the Cannabis Control Commission has been given the authority to establish a strong regulatory system that ensures public safety and allows for responsible sale and use of marijuana products", she said in a statement.

The president has frequently criticized Sessions, particularly over his decision to recuse himself from oversight of the federal investigation into potential collusion between Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and Russian Federation.

Gardner said he had lifted some holds earlier this year after "positive discussions with the DOJ" but that with Trump's assurances, he would be lifting all remaining ones.

Trump offered qualified support for legalisation while on the presidential campaign trail, saying that medical marijuana "should happen" and that laws regarding recreational usage should be left in the hands of individual states.

U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer, an Oregon Democrat and founder of the Congressional Cannabis Caucus, however, cast doubt on the president's commitment to addressing federal marijuana laws.

Gardner hopes to introduce bipartisan legislation keeping the federal government from interfering in state marijuana markets.
