The Damascus sky lights up with missile fire as the US Britain and France launch an attack on Syria

May, who has regained confidence after winning support for her tough stance on Syria and Russian Federation, will make a statement to parliament on her decision to join the United States and France in Saturday's strikes in retaliation for a suspected gas attack.

"There is no proposal on the table for further attacks because so far, thank heavens, the Assad regime has not been so foolish to launch another chemical weapons attack", Johnson said.

Johnson said May and her cabinet of top ministers had to move quickly on Syria, so could not risk recalling parliament from its holiday break, and added that there were plenty of examples of when a prime minister did not get its approval.

Ian Blackford, the leader of the opposition Scottish National Party in Westminster, was one of many who asked May why she had not recalled parliament for a vote, breaking with a convention dating back to the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

"I'm absolutely clear that it is parliament's responsibility to hold me to account for such decisions and parliament will do so", May told the House of Commons in a rowdy session.

Speaking to the BBC, Johnson said what he described as the successful strikes on three sites in Syria were a message from the world that enough was enough, but acknowledged he could not say whether Assad still had chemical weapons.

May, whose leadership has been questioned after scandals, divisions over Brexit and an ill-judged election that lost her party its majority in parliament, has found support from other global leaders for backing action against Syria. "But it is my responsibility as prime minister to make these decisions and I will make them".

She now relies on the support of a small Northern Irish party, which has supported the action in Syria, and has tried to dodge votes that might not go her way.

But she avoided answering questions on whether parliament would be consulted on any further strikes and ignored demands by Corbyn for a War Powers Act to limit the government's power to launch military action.

The United Kingdom is now not considering further attacks on Syria linked to Damascus' alleged use of chemical weapons, UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson said Sunday.

May will also apply for an emergency debate to give lawmakers "an extended opportunity to discuss the military action", her office said, in what could be an attempt to draw the sting out of any opposition motion for the same.

An alliance official said the United States, France nd Britain will brief North Atlantic Treaty Organisation envoys on Saturday about their coordinated air strikes on Syrian government targets overnight.

"Outsourcing that decision to people who do not have the full picture is, I think, quite wrong", International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt told BBC radio.
