VAR awards penalty during half time of Bundesliga match

Mainz VAR penalty madness

During the Bundesliga meeting between Mainz and Freiburg, a penalty was awarded AFTER the players had left the pitch for half-time.

It came just before the break when Pablo De Blasis converted from the penalty spot to give the hosts a halftime lead - but that was only half the story.

Winkmann watched the incident again on the pitchside screen and evidently decided Freiburg's Marc Oliver Kempf had deliberately put his hand to the ball.

He ordered both sets of players back onto the pitch so that the penalty could be taken.

In the dying seconds of the first half, Mainz had an appeal for handball turned down by referee Guido Winkmann, with the scores still at 0-0.

There was a further 10-minute delay before the start of the second half as fans threw hundreds of toilet rolls onto the pitch in a protest against Monday evening matches.

Mainz defeated Freiburg 2-0 in a huge Bundesliga relegation battle game on Monday night.

"We were under the impression that when the referee blows for half-time that's it", Saier contined.

Protests also delayed the initial kickoff, and the whole game took place to the sound of shrill whistles as supporters made their displeasure known with the German football league.

Freiburg goalkeeper Alexander Schwolow gifted possession to Robin Quaison and De Blasis breathed a sigh of relief as his shot at an open goal went in agonisingly off the post.

Mainz benefited from a freakish penalty decision which helped to seal a controversial 2-0 victory over fellow strugglers Freiburg in the Bundesliga.
