Warm, dry weather sparks extreme fire danger for most of Colorado

High fire danger - 04/11/18

Blowing dust is possible. NWS said conditions should gradually improve after 7 p.m.

Wildfire experts say Colorado could be on track for one of the busiest seasons on record.

Farther south toward the Virginia North Carolina Border, winds speeds will be less, but still pose a concern, especially during the peak heating part of the afternoon when leaf litter and brush will be the driest. It includes Wickenburg, much of western, northern and central Phoenix, Interstate 10 from Phoenix westward and Interstate 17 from Phoenix northward.

I would not be surprised if another Red Flag Warning is issued for Thursday as well as winds are expected to be even stronger. NWS officials state winds could gust as high as 40 miles per hour on Thursday afternoon.

A Red Flag Warning will remain in effect from 12:00 PM Thursday until 8:00 PM Thursday for Barbour, Braxton, Doddridge, Lewis, Harrison, Gilmer, Ritchie, Tyler, Taylor, Upshur, Randolph, Pocahontas & Webster Counties. Because of this, we also have High Wind Watch has been issued for Thursday afternoon and evening.

"With the majority of fire starts being human-caused in combination with the drought conditions in Colorado, we are at increased risk of some of the largest, most damaging wildfires", says Mike Morgan, director of the Division of Fire Prevention and Control. Temperatures will drop as well, only climbing to the 40s and 50s.
