After Guerrero's World Cup ban, union seeks new doping rules

Paolo Guerrero

It has now been extended to January after the CAS upheld an appeal by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Peru will fight it out with France, Denmark and Australia for qualification from Group C. This is Peru's first-ever appearance in football's biggest stage since 1982.

Guerrero was initially banned for one year in December after testing positive for cocaine metabolite benzoylecgonine after his country's 0-0 draw in their World Cup qualifier against Argentina in Buenos Aires on October 6.

World footballers' union FIFPro has condemned the 14-month drugs ban that will rule Peru's captain and record goalscorer Paolo Guerrero out of the World Cup as "unfair and disproportionate".

The forward was originally banned from all FIFA competitions for a year, which would have kept him out of Russia had the ban not been reduced by FIFA, after an appeal, to six months.

"FIFPro is calling for an urgent meeting with FIFA after football player Paolo Guerrero was suspended for 14 months for accidentally ingesting a banned substance, preventing him from representing Peru at the World Cup", a statement from FIFPro read.

Peru fans showed their support for him in Geneva.

It accepted that Peru's all-time leading scorer did not intend to enhance performance but said he was at fault, even if not significantly.

Having completed the suspension and played two matches for his club Flamengo, Guerrero was handed the extended ban by CAS on Monday.

Guerrero was serving a suspension when Peru beat New Zealand 2-0 over two legs in last November's intercontinental World Cup play-off.

Accepting Guerrero's argument that the substance was accidentally consumed in contaminated tea, Federation Internationale de Football Association reduced the ban to six months, a period which would have enabled Guerrero to play in Russia, and he was duly named in Peru's provisional squad on Sunday.

Guerrero scored his first goal on Sunday since the suspension, a header in Flamengo's 3-2 defeat at Chapecoense in the Brazilian championship. Without the three extra points, Peru would have fallen below Chile and Paraguay in the standings and out of contention.
