Another Personality Quiz on Facebook Exposes Data of Millions of Users

Facebook has suspended 200 apps over data misuse

According to the report, while most tweets are public, Twitter charges companies and organisations to collect them en masse. However, people really need to understand that it's a complicated world and must step wisely.

The revelations over Cambridge Analytica have prompted investigations on both sides of the Atlantic and led Facebook to tighten its policies on how personal data is shared and accessed. The Verge highlights that the data collection project may have begun in 2009 and there was some discussion of Cambridge Analytica acquiring the data, though apparently it was turned down due to its involvement in politics. Those changes, according to Facebook, significantly reduced the amount of data that apps could access.

"To date, thousands of apps have been investigated and around 200 have been suspended - pending a thorough investigation into whether they did in fact misuse any data", the executive noted.

Facebook has said Mark Zuckerberg has no plans to come to the United Kingdom to give evidence to parliament despite the threat of a formal summons, prompting frustrated MPs inquiring into the Cambridge Analytica data breach to ask if he would appear via video link instead. "And second, where we have concerns, we will conduct interviews, make requests for information (RFI) - which ask a series of detailed questions about the app and the data it has access to - and perform audits that may include on-site inspections".

Facebook has now suspended the myPersonality app (and around 200 other similar apps) in its efforts to investigate apps that may have violated its data privacy policies. The report said that the academics at the University of Cambridge distributed the data from the personality quiz app named myPersonality to hundreds of researchers via a website with insufficient security provisions.

We would like the session here to take place by 24 May... Aleksandr Kogan, who created tools for Cambridge Analytica that allowed the political consultancy to psychologically profile and target voters, bought the data from the microblogging website in 2015, before the recent scandal came to light, The Sunday Telegraph reported. The company said that the payouts could go as high as $40,000, depending on the impact of each report, though there are no specific limitations set.

While Facebook did not mention the 200 suspended apps in question, there is also no clarity as to how long will the investigation take. The harm to a user finally depends on how much he/she engages in a social networking site and the amount of information he/she shares.

In the end, the only tried and tested solution to social network privacy problems is to limit one's presence altogether.
