Burkina Faso cuts diplomatic ties with Taiwan after intense pressure from China

BEIJING-Taiwan lost its second diplomatic partner in less than a month as the West African state of Burkina Faso severed relations amid a Chinese campaign to suppress worldwide recognition of the self-ruled island, which Beijing claims as part of its territory.

The Dominican Republic switched recognition to Beijing earlier in May, terminating a 77-year diplomatic relationship to recognise China.

Taiwanese Foreign Minister Joseph Wu confirmed the move at a briefing Thursday.

The R.O.C. government is very grateful for all the support extended to Taiwan in various forms this year by diplomatic allies and like-minded countries.

Independence-leaning President Tsai Ing-wen told reporters that Taiwan would only work harder at cooperating with other countries.

Taiwanese and Chinese officials had no immediate comment.

The people of Taiwan should not be alarmed as the air force was well able to monitor the Chinese aircraft as they approach and during their missions and can ensure Taiwan's security, the ministry added.

Beijing has raised the pressure on Tsai, whose government refuses to acknowledge that Taiwan - whose democratic freedoms stand in stark contrast to Communist-ruled China - is part of a "one China". Japanese retailer Muji was fined after being found to be using packaging that listed Taiwan as a country while USA retailer Gap Inc issued an apology last week for selling a T-shirt which it said had an incorrect map of China.

On Friday May 25, China's aviation regulator announced that only 18 out of 44 airlines had changed their designation of Taiwan on their webpages to suggest it was a Chinese territory, reports Reuters.

That pressure appears to have grown since Mr. Trump approved a law in March authorizing high-level official visits between the USA and the island. "But Taiwan is in a situation that it is being blocked by China to do all those things".

China's foreign ministry said Beijing appreciates Burkina Faso's move to sever ties with Taiwan.

Burkina Faso is the fourth country to have broken ties with Taiwan since Ms. Tsai's election, leaving the island with just one diplomatic partner in Africa: the kingdom of eSwatini, formerly known as Swaziland, with a population of about 1.3 million.

The Chinese have long wanted for the Taiwanese to come under Beijing rules.

A communique on establishing relations was signed in Beijing by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and his counterpart Alpha Barry.
