Donald Trump: US-North Korea summit back on for June 12

Kim Jong-un committed to complete denuclearisation, says Moon Jae-in after North-South 'surprise' summit

The president's remarks followed a surprise meeting Saturday between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and South Korean President Moon Jae-in, during which the pair agreed their countries would have "high-level talks" next month and Kim "expressed his fixed will" on meeting with Trump, according to Yonhap News.

A summit between North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and US President Donald Trump is anticipated on July 12.

"It's moving along very nicely", Trump told reporters late Saturday when asked for an update. "We're looking at June 12 in Singapore, that hasn't changed", Trump said.

It allowed Mr Moon to push for a US-North Korean summit that he sees as the best way to ease animosity that had some fearing a war previous year.

A day later, however, the United States leader hinted that the meeting may still take place, citing "very productive talks" with North Korea and its commitment to finding a diplomatic solution to the nuclear issue.

The spontaneous offer by Kim to meet, and Moon's quick acceptance, shows how close the two leaders have become in a short period of time. Trump said his decision was based on the "tremendous anger and open hostility displayed" by North Korea officials recently over USA demands that Pyongyang follow the Libya denuclearization model.

"Still, his apparent willingness to continue diplomatic efforts does suggest that Mr. Kim, 34, may be under pressure to satisfy rising expectations in North Korea for economic gains and shake off the painful grip of sanctions", the story says.

"I stressed that the two leaders need to settle misunderstandings through direct communication and have sufficient communication through working-level talks on the agenda to be agreed on at the summit", Moon said, adding that Kim agreed.

The Trump administration's main demand from North Korea is that it shut down its nuclear weapons program completely and irreversibly. Moon said Trump's decision left him "perplexed" and was "very regrettable".

"Kim stressed again that he had a firm determination towards complete denuclearisation", Moon told reporters on Sunday. They allowed Moon to push for a U.S.

A senior South Korean official later said that the two Koreas are discussing a possible non-aggression pledge and the start of peace treaty talks as a way of addressing Pyongyang's security concerns ahead of U.S. "The road to complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula and peace will never be easy", he said.

The prime minister said he plans to hold talks with Trump over the telephone soon after returning to Japan.

Saturday's meeting between Moon and Kim took place on the North Korean side of Panmunjom, a heavily fortified village that lies between the two countries where the 1953 armistice was signed.

The talks between North and South Korea was initially supposed to occur earlier this month until it was called off by the North, citing military exercises conducted by the South and the U.S. In addition to his summits with Moon and Xi, Kim also has had two meetings with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
