Elon Musk to fix Tesla 'braking flaw'

Tesla Model 3 costs

Tesla Inc.'s (TSLA) Model 3 has failed to find a place on the "recommended" list by the influential American magazine Consumer Reports, which is published by a nonprofit organization and provides product ratings and reviews.

This performance take on the Model 3 will be the top-of-the-range version of the auto, and in true Elon Musk style the specification and pricing for the new options were posted on Twitter. Our testers also found flaws-big flaws-such as long stopping distances in our emergency braking test and difficult-to-use controls. Vehicle and Driver, in its published test of a Model 3, said it noticed "a freaky amount of variation" in its test, including one stop from 70 miles per hour that took 'an interminable 196 feet'. "Also Consumer Reports has an early production vehicle".

For current Tesla owners, there was another titillating tidbit: You will soon be able to request service from your phone, and Tesla will come to you to take care of the vehicle.

Consumer Reports' main issue, which has already been promised by Elon Musk to be rectified via an over-the-air update, was the sedan's excessive braking distance.

But Musk acknowledged that the discrepancy could be a sign that early-production versions of the Model 3 "have longer braking distances than others".

Tesla immediately offered up data of its own, which contradicted Consumer Reports' tests. Musk said that the issue was "very strange" and was caused by an ABS calibration algorithm.

Tesla-CEO Elon Musk speaks during the delivery of the first Tesla Model 3 in Fremont, US.

"Looks like this can be fixed with a firmware update", Musk explained.

This means that even simple functions, like adjusting the mirrors or changing the direction of the airflow from the air-conditioning vents.

Currently, Tesla's ordering web site indicates that the less expensive cars with the the smaller battery packs won't be delivered until the end of this year.

'Also Consumer Reports has an early production vehicle. If there is vehicle variability, we will figure it out and address. Tesla expects to provide an over-the-air software update in a matter of days.

Neil Saunders, managing director of consumer research house GlobalData Retail says that people should be patient when it comes to letting Tesla get everything right. "It is important not to be too harsh on Tesla as other vehicles have had their share of safety and technical issues".
