Facebook offers update on its app investigation and audit process

The company has evaluated thousands of apps to see if they had access to large amounts of data, and will now investigate those it has identified as potentially misusing that data, it said in a blog post on Monday.

Archibong says Facebook plans to launch thorough investigations into each of the ~200 apps to determine if they misused user data.

Facebook has now hinted at an answer May 14, announcing that it suspended 200 apps as it investigates whether they had misused people's data.

Archibong added that Facebook will be conducting interviews with and submitting requests for informations to any developers' whose apps raise concerns. The company suspended apps after going through a thorough investigation to ensure that the developers didn't abuse Facebook user's information. Just like how they did with Cambridge Analytica, this website will show people if them or their friends installed an app that misused data before the year 2015.

Apple facing class action lawsuit over defective MacBook Pro keyboards
However, according to this lawsuit, that warranty is not enough as the core functionality of these laptops has been impacted. The new mechanism replaced the scissors-shaped one, which is the default key switch mechanism for most laptop keyboards.

Appearing before the US Congress in April, Zuckerberg told lawmakers that his own personal data was part of 87 million Facebook users that was improperly shared with British political consultancy firm Cambridge Analytica. In 2014, Facebook changed its policies to block apps from acquiring users' friends' data unless their friends had independently authorized the app.

He pledged that every app receiving information from Facebook would be audited and that all the apps that either refused or failed the audit would be permanently banned. He promised to take action against any similar apps that may have exploited seemingly lax security protocols to scoop and scape public data from its 2 billion users. And, as Facebook insists on real names to be used for opening user accounts, in most cases this means that the data is tied to a real-world name and identity. Over the past two months, the company has investigated "thousands" of apps that had previously been granted such access, according to Archibong.

The app's creators, David Stillwell and Michal Kosinski, reportedly were involved with a company called Cambridge Personality Research, which sold a tool for ad targeting based on myPersonality data sets.

Facebook suspended Cambridge Analytica, which has since filed for insolvency, from its platforms in light of the Observer and New York Times' reporting.
